There's a unicorn in my Vortex

It’s quite easy to pick a bunch of really intense, popular, progressive, or otherwise important albums in 1977, some of which are no doubt well known amongst the Vortex. But another aspect of music is its ability to uniquely soundtrack our lives, which of course is the reason that it holds a unique power to bring up nostalgia over basically all of the other arts, but also to give us association with powerful memories or feelings even outside of nostalgia per se.

This Birthtopster malarkey has fallen at a good time. Oasis are shit but I’ve grown to like their musty stench; we all sniff our hands from time to time. I’m going to see (or, at the time of this being sent out, have just seen) Oasis in Manchester for their “Noel Gallagher Existential Post-Divorce Crisis Reunion Tour.” The brothers have gaffer-taped the multiple holes in their upturned bucket-hat flotation device of a relationship, presenting the façade of harmony on stage.

1992 was chokkas (:tight:) with big and interesting album releases. Releases from well established bands like R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People, Faith No More’s Angel Dust, and Sonic Youth’s Dirty all topped year-end album charts. Whitney Houston set the world ablaze with her cover of “I Will Always Love You" on The Bodyguard OST. Huge debut releases by Rage Against the Machine (Rage Against the Machine) and Pavement (Slanted & Enchanted) changed the music scene for decades to come.

Iannis Xenakis differentiated western music from eastern by linear progression. A note is simply the effect of a prior note, and in turn the cause of another note. Chords demand resolution, progressions require conclusion. Time itself must be justified, through action. This is true – cold, hard fact. I agree, and think this way too. But it isn’t the only way. In the east, music is like a place, or a time.
