Why they can’t play riffs that fucks all the time

Here is where I would pen my thoughts on Deafheaven, if I had any. Sometimes I stare blankly at these pages for hours or days waiting to figure out my angle on a particular album. Mere description is too perfunctory, but profuse superlatives are too dismissive, by dint of being too impersonal. The tone is struck through to the middle ground, an attempt to articulate the uniqueness of the work, all whilst trying not to kill the magic of the thing itself.

To say the last three years of the 70s were an important time for rock music would be an understatement. Before the punk movement’s crescendo had even started to ebb, a group of forward-thinking bands began breaking it apart and re-arranging its components into forms with far-reaching implications for what would come to be called alternative rock, and eventually indie rock. In quick succession, ‘77, ‘78, and ‘79 saw the release of post-punk classics like Television’s Marquee Moon, Talking Heads’ 77, More Songs About Buildings and Food, and Fear of Music, Wire’s Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154, and Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures.

These are just some of what constitutes the bare minimum before the invocation of other, similar efforts, can be made. Of course, we’re all deeply unoriginal people, to the extent that some thinkers deny free will based on aesthetic unoriginality, you can only think the thoughts you have, so on and so forth.
