As far as first weeks go, not bad! January, often maligned as the year’s superfluous opening ambient track, serves as the enthusiasts’ reprieve – a time where it is actually possible to stay comfortably on the release treadmill. I went a little above and beyond – a smooth 160 releases – and found the cream of this rather plentiful crop. First, a recap. Technically, the biggest event was the return of false Batushka, now in the guise of Patriarkh, having failed to acquire the mandate of heaven.

As it is now time to officially begin on 2025, it seems a perfect time to close out the books on 2024 and reflect on the year that was. I took a different approach this year, which was to focus more on quality than quantity. To achieve this, I primarily explored music in the top of the sheet and prioritised relistens more than ever before. The result: my average ended up being the highest it has in years - 5.

A very strawb round up of the year

Every year there will be grouches who complain that there’s no good music (or movies/tv shows/etc), and every year I respond by saying that there’s always good music, and if you can’t find it that’s on you. That being said, I feel 2024 was better overall than the last few, with many albums that I enjoyed enough to listen to, until Bandcamp told me to pay up. I had a good time with the sheet this year, absquatulating to my heart’s content and not forcing myself to fill gaps.

The ''top'' albums according to him and no one else

15 - Neural Indent / Gorenette Coleman - Neural Indent / Gorenette Coleman Extreme experimentation yields insane results. Matt Stephens’ split with himself takes two logical affronts to absurd conclusions, each maximally challenging to categorization and palatability alike. Ostensibly goregrind, Neural Indent’s non sequitur technical brutal illogic free jazz defies free improvisation: is it carefully composed extemporaneous nonsense, or aleatoric preprogrammed seizure? Either way, I can imagine Neural Indent opening for Conlon Nancarrow on the Extremely Hard Bop tour.
