Unlike, perhaps, some fellow Vortexers, it took me quite a few years to get serious about music listening. Therefore, choosing an album from the year I was 0 required some research. I found plenty of famous, important albums, but they were unfortunately too well known to spark an interesting discourse. I had to dig deeper. That’s how I stumbled on Pestilence’s Spheres. I was quite unfamiliar with Pestilence as a whole besides a few spins of Consuming Impulse and its… Charming cover art.

Some of you, I’m sure, see this and groan. You think you’re too good for this? You’re not! Try as you might to suppress that feeling, something within you lives when you hear Fabio Leone belt out “MIGHTY WARRIOR” on the first chorus. People who are reading this tend towards music which is dark and transgressive. You may not want to believe me, but right now, Legendary Tales is more transgressive than any avant dissoshit blackened death metal on the 2025 sheet.

Is the mostly forgotten debut album by one of the future’s biggest rappers interesting ?

1996 was the first year worth living, existing before was simply a waiting room. Coming to be later was missing the golden moment, the culmination of centuries needed to create the combination of atoms required to come up with something special and someone that could change the world. Sadly, my mother gave into the bottle while gestating and I came out instead of a world changer, cheers! For my album I thought about many options, I thought it was a great chance to discover something new for myself that was worthwhile.

Dulce Pontes - Lágrimas

Having represented Portugal in the Eurovision song contest of 1991, Dulce Pontes' unquestionable singing talent was already well established within Portugal’s cultural consciousness. Lusitana Paixão was a sappy, trite and vapid national pride ballad, but this was enough to secure an 8th place finish. Her outstanding vocal command notwithstanding, she was still lacking individuality, both personally and artistically. Her debut disc, which was filled with very well sung adult contemporary slop but her sophomore attempted something different altogether.
