I was 7 years old in 2006. While I don’t remember what I was learning in school or what color of paint chips I was eating, I do remember finding this bizarre CD among my older sister’s collection of christian rock alongside bands like Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, and whatever other acts the middle school youth group was deeming worthwhile. By the time I hit 5th grade, Family Force 5’s debut was a mainstay in my portable CD player, coming along in the backseat on car trips and being spun in the basement on my parent’s stereo system.

You cannot take Sweden out of Quillon

Through this Almostopster project we have now had rap, country, black metal, classic rock such as the Beatles and even some electro-industrial. So what is it time for now? No, not any Swedish punk, you get radio-friendly Britpop instead. As Tarb commented when I told him of my choice; I really had to pick an album by a band effectively called “Sweden”. Although that was actually just a coincidence, I’ll admit it made me more certain it was the right choice as the resident Swede here.

My pick stems from the same place as ferday’s. It stems from a time before I got caught in an insane Vortex of new listens that has me react to novelty with a shrug and a 5. Back then, things were easier, simpler, and new albums felt special. That’s right, in my case, I’m talking about teenage years. At that time, my musical landscape was a hodgepodge of whatever I came across.

A short album for once

It’s summer 1987. There are tradies in the house, a kitchen renovation as is the hazy recollection. They are listening to music on their Magnavox D8270, and they leave a briefcase full of cassettes behind each night, 24 in all. Music is all but banned in our house, thanks to the naivety of fundamentalism. Something drove me to explore those cassettes in the safety of my room at night, and soon I was dubbing over every open cassette in the house, replacing worship music with such classics as Master of Puppets, Pyromania, Bat out of Hell, and oddly the one that stuck with me the most, Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet’s Wow Flutter Hiss ‘86.
